Scottsdale was founded in 1888 and was original named Orangedale. Winfield Scott moved to the area in 1888 as an Army Chaplain, purchasing 640 acres for $3.50 an acre. He and his brother began planting citrus trees in the area . Scottsdale wasn’t incorporated until 1951. Wow has real estate changed! Today Scottsdale is home to more than 230,000 full time residents. Of course in the winter, our hotels and furnished rentals are filled with visitors from the North. Scottsdale is known as being a winter haven for our northern neighbors who want to escape the winter weather. For a city of its size, 31 miles long and 11 miles wide, there is plenty to keep folks busy. There are over 200 golf courses in the area, with the Tournament of Players Club (TPC) being home to the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The Cactus League Spring Training for pro baseball teams is home to this area with 15 teams playing on 10 fields all over the Phoenix Metro Area from February through March. There are also lots of hiking trails to keep the outdoorsy person busy!
Our homes are as varied as small bungalows all the way up to multi-million dollar mansions. Condos are also a big part of Scottsdale living for second home owners. The median home price for the Scottsdale area is $400,000. Condos can be an affordable option and can be priced from under $100,000 into the millions, depending on what you are looking for. One thing is for sure, there is truly something for everyone.
Scottsdale’s original landscape began just north of Tempe, Arizona. South Scottsdale homes are typically built in the 1940’s and 1950’s, with homes becoming newer as you drive north. The far north section of Scottsdale is home to unique resorts, shopping and exclusive homes. Frank Lloyd Wright ventured north in 1937 and formed Taliesin West. To this day, Taliesin West is a fully functioning architecture school, but tours of the grounds are available as well as many books about Wright and the school.
