MOVING TIPS FROM A 30-YEAR INDUSTRY PROVIDER
As summer begins, beside all of the wonderful things this brings, it also launches the peak moving season. Families tend to want to move their children when school is out whenever possible. What this does is create a situation for professional movers where they see 50% of their annual revenue generated between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
So, a logistical nightmare for a logistics industry…..
And, if you’re stressed, don’t wonder why. According to the American Psychiatric Association, moving is the third most stressful activity we experience following first – loss of a loved one, and second – loss of your work.So find an honest professional carrier (there are many actually) and rely on their expertise for help. Here are some basics to start the process:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Start your research early. Six weeks to two months in advance of your anticipated move is best.
- Always seek an in-home appraisal and only accept a written quote – protects you from the mover saying “you didn’t tell us that” – you are not a moving consultant so likely don’t know what’s critical and not
- Understand the basis of how you’re being charged – Hourly? Weight? Space? Guaranteed? Estimated?
- Are you planning on boxing your loose items? It can be an overwhelming task – talk to your mover about what some packing help may cost
- You are NOT buying a Honda. Do not just look at the bottom line assuming you are getting the same services from everyone – professional moves are a combination of different services that make up that bottom line – make sure you see everything the same from each provider. Take your time – most mover’s proposals are not very “user friendly” with “boiler plate” and the like…
- Fully understand what the mover’s liability is for loss and damage. It can be VERY confusing as many options exist, some of which will leave you sorely disappointed if you have damage
- If this is a long distance move, be sure to understand the carrier’s delivery schedule fully – only the dates on the Bill of Lading are enforceable, not what anyone tells you. So do understand your day/days of delivery and is there any penalty to your provider for lack of performance
- Sort, discard, then do it again. Every ounce counts – trite but true. Do not spend good money toting about items you think you may someday, in the future, if you ever have a party that you may possibly need this box full of chaffing dishes….NO, NO, NO! You’ll likely never use it again if you’ve not touched in 2-3 years.
- Conversely, the cost of sending a couch across the country as part of your move is about $150. So, if you still like it, don’t get rid of it to save moving costs!
